| Glossary > Computers >SQL SQLStructured Query Language. Developed by IBM in the mid-1970s as a way to get information into and out of relational database management systems. A fundamental difference between SQL and standard programming languages is that SQL is declarative. You specify what kind of data you want from the database; the RDBMS is responsible for figuring out how to retrieve it. I include a tutorial on SQL in the chapter "Database Management Systems". |
